Advent 2014! The Day before...

It's the day before Dec 1st...
Henry just turned 6 this year and we decided that since he's older now we are going to have him become more involved in the planning the activities this year.
We started by talking about what advent means and the main reason for this season- to celebrate Jesus' birthday! Then we brainstormed for words that describe him and how he lived his life. Next, we looked through the events that we had done in the past few years and used those ideas to help us make lists of activities that fit those characteristics.  Finally, we came up with the top 10 things that we would like to do this year.  He also picked out 3 fun things that he definitely would like to do again to add onto the calendar.
Instead of it being a "surprise" like in years past, we are going to fill the advent mittens with the activity that we completed each day, or what we had learned or remembered from that day.
We also got a new book called, "Counting the Days, Lighting the Candles" for our advent devotions. Each week, we are going to be lighting the advent candles and we will also talk about the meaning of that candle for each week.  The week's devotions will also be related to the theme of that week.  So we decided to also make a craft out of the candle portion of the activity!
Henry said December is his favorite month (other than November since it is his birthday month) and he had been looking forward to it and talking about it for a few months now. Now that it's finally here, he is very excited! Tree's up!
