Since Henry got to help decide what advent activities he would like to do again this year, we are kicking off day one with one of Henry's favorite things to do!
Day 1's activity is to set the festive mood of the season by putting up the Christmas lights. Henry was able to help out a little more this year by helping Dada untangle the Christmas lights, and deciding where the snowmen and tree branches lights should be placed in the front yard. Thank goodness it wasn't raining much when we were outside putting the actual lights up. Mama purchased a few new lights to add to our collection and the the new LED tree branches perfectly accent the older twinkling snowmen.
On Day 1, we also decorated and lit our first advent candle. Dada painted a glass cup with a glue water mixture and Henry and Dada stuck purple tissue paper on top of it to make the first purple candle. This first week's candle is the candle of Hope and Henry enjoyed making the candle flame dance as he spoke over the top of it.
This year, we decided to spend some time each day in devotion to God by going through the book, "Counting the Days, Lighting the Candles." The verse for the first day is Psalm 113 which Henry summarized as "Jesus gives the poor to the princes to sit with them. He (God) gives us the best gift!"
Day 2's activity is one our favorites and is a chance for Henry to give to those with far fewer things than us through Samaritan's Purse organization. Henry spend the dojo points he's been saving up all year to sponsor people in need, and Mama and Dada matches his donation. This year, Henry chose to give the gift of clean water, emergency shelter, life-saving food, loving care for an orphan, and help to a poor farmer. He said "I think it's nice because we are using our stuff and giving them away to get things for other people."
Day 2's verse is 2 Peter 3:8-10 which Henry said is where "God is not slow and he is patient with us and we will get a new world."
